How may I contact an
inmate by phone?
| Telephone
calls cannot be placed to inmates. Inmates have daily access to
phones that allow them to place collect local and long distance
calls. Jail
Staff are not allowed to pass notes or messages to inmates.

I send mail to an
inmate?
| Yes, however, inmates are not allowed to receive certain
items for various reasons. If restricted items are used or sent, the
inmate will not receive the mail until their date of release.
The
items not allowed are:

Items that can be purchased on
commissary (blank paper, envelopes, pens, blank cards, phone cards)

Stamps
-
Unknown
substances on paper, envelopes, or photos

Lipstick,
perfume, cologne, or scented items

Stickers,
tape, post-it notes, labels, glitter (including glitter pens),
glued on items, white- out, paint

will be set for the potential client. |

| The
Program Screening Officer will let the client know at the time of
their screening. |

If I receive a deferred
sentence, when should I report to start serving my sentence?
| On the
date that the courts specify. |

What can cause
Work Release to be terminated?
| The use
of alcohol or any controlled substances with cause an inmate to be
terminated from work release. Also, failure to comply with the work
release program rules can cause you to be terminated from the
program. |

Property
|
What type of property may
be brought to an inmate?
All clothing and necessary personal hygiene items are
provided. The Corrections Department will accept only the following
items:
-- Legal documents
-- Prescription glasses or contacts
-- Court clothing for trials
-- Medications prescribed by a licensed medical provider. |

What type of property can
an inmate have while incarcerated?
| Jail
issued clothing and bedding items and items purchased from our
commissary list. |

When can
an inmate release
property to the public?
|
Keys can be released
up to 72 hours after incarceration. Other property will not be
released at any time.
If an inmate has
been sentenced to prison, property may be picked up the day
after they have been transported.

When and where can I place
money on an inmate's account?
Money can
be deposited on an inmate's account by sending a cashier's check or
a money order to the jail address. The address is:

Money orders, cashier's checks and cash may be left for inmates:
Monday through Friday from 8:30am to
3:15pm

When can inmates buy items
from the commissary?
| Inmates
can order from the commissary on Sunday evenings. In order for an
inmate to receive commissary, they need to have money available to
be deducted from their account no later than Monday night. Money is
deducted on Tuesday mornings for commissary requests. |

When can inmates release
money from their accounts to the public?
| One time
only and with the Sergeant's approval, inmates may release money
from their accounts at their visiting time. |

When an inmate is
released, in what form will his/her account be returned?
| All
inmates receive a check for the balance of their account. |

Where will an individual
be booked after his/her arrest?
| The
Cowlitz County Jail, 1935 First Ave., Longview, WA. 98632 |

How can someone that has
just been arrested be released without appearing in court?
| An inmate
can be released without appearing in court with posted bail. |
|
Where do I go to post an
inmate's bail or fine?
|
Bail can
be posted at any time.
During business hours, cash bail can be
posted on the 2nd floor of the Hall of Justice with the respective
Court Clerk.

After hours the jail
will take cash bail.
The jail does not
take checks and will need the exact amount of bail. We cannot
make change.
There are local Bail Bond Agencies in the phone
book that are also available any time, and will need the name
and charges of the inmate to get started.

Who determines if an
individual can be released on bond prior to appearing in court?
| For
felony charges, the
arresting officer and prosecutor determines if an individual can be
released on bond prior to appearing in court.
For misdemeanors, most
municipal and district courts have pre-set bail amounts for each
charge. If extenuating circumstances exist, the arresting officer
contacts the prosecutor to determine the appropriate bail to set. |

Will the Corrections
Department take a personal check?
| No. The
Corrections Department will only accept:

Cashiers Check
Money Order
Tax Refund Check
SSI Check (Jail will check eligibility)
Unemployment Checks (Jail will check eligibility)

What is the deadline to
post a bond for someone who has not appeared in court yet during a court
day?
| Bond must
be posted prior to the docket starting on the day of court for
someone who has not appeared in court.

After an inmate is
sentenced, who calculates the release date?
| The Court
Officers determines release dates. |
|
Can the Corrections
Department tell me when someone is scheduled for release?
| No.
The Corrections Department will not tell you when an inmate will be
released. |
|
When are inmates released after they are finished with their sentence?
|
Typically, inmates are released the morning of their release date,
unless a judge has ordered otherwise. For instance, if an inmate is
sentenced to 24 hours and they report for jail at 7pm, they will be
released at 7pm on the following day. |
