MISSION
|
|
To provide cost-effective supervision
to offenders who are referred by the District and Municipal
courts.
Our motto is to "have the
compassion to help those who want to help themselves and the passion to
ensure that those who won't get their due justice."
|
|
Pre-Sentence Investigations
|
|
Pre-Sentence investigations are
performed by a Probation Officer in which she/he gathers the facts
surrounding the case by interviewing witnesses and the defendant,
reviewing police reports, and the criminal history. They then
provide a report to the court along with their recommendation based on
their investigation findings.
|
|
Deferred
Prosecution Monitoring
|
|
Deferred Prosecution Monitoring is
for those individuals that have admitted to having a substance dependence
problem and agree to attend a 2 year substance abuse program with
probation monitored supervision for compliance for 5 years total.
|
|
Stipulated
Continuance
|
|
Stipulated Continuance is an
agreement the defendant has with the court whereby he/she agrees to
specific conditions in exchange for a reduction of charges or dismissal
at the end of probation.
|
|
Probation
Supervision
|
|
Probation Supervision is for
those individuals that have plead guilty to a misdemeanor offense and the
court has sentenced them to meet specific conditions (treatment, no
further criminal violation, etc) and to be
under supervision for a specified length of time.
|
|
Direct
Referrals to Community Resources
|
|
The Direct Referral program entails a
one-time meeting with an offender during which time the Probation Officer
sends the offender to an appropriate treatment program. The
offender is given a deadline to demonstrate that he/she has completed the
recommended program. Direct Referrals are intended to provide
low-risk individuals with social services.

DUI Victim
Impact Panels, (English & Spanish)
|
|
The DUI Victim Impact Panel program
was implemented in July of 1991. The attendance fee is $20.00 per
offender with approximately 80 offenders per month attending. The
victim panel is a collaborative effort between the Probation Department,
the Cowlitz County Victim Panel Coordinator, members of MADD and many
other dedicated volunteers. The panel provides offenders with
information from victims and offenders of DUI crashes and the tragic
consequences of drinking and driving. We also offer a Spanish
Victim Impact Panel quarterly for the benefit of our Spanish-speaking
clients.

DUI Education
Program
|
|
Probation Services administers the
DUI Education Program. State law requires first-time offenders to
receive a minimum sentence of 24 or 48 hours in custody depending on past
record and blood-alcohol level. Instead of just sitting in jail, we
have the offenders attend an educational program at the County Conference
Building using videos and presentations from alcohol treatment agencies,
Alcoholics Anonymous, the Prosecutor’s Office, the Department of
Licensing, a trauma program through St. John Medical Center, etc.
This alternative confinement is more effective and economical than
placing them in jail. It frees up jail beds and the offenders are
required to pay $100.00 each for the cost of the program. This
program continues to expand and additional sessions are frequently added
to accommodate the need. We are currently running 19 sessions per
year with approximately 21 attendees per session or 400 attendees per
year.
