Description
of Other Communicable Diseases
Depending on the
disease, illnesses can be transmitted through drinking water, food,
bodies of water, animal or insect bites, breathing in air, contact
with the bodily fluids of humans or animals (saliva, blood, semen,
etc.) and tactile contact with live or dead animals or through
bioterrorism.
Airborne diseases that have occurred in
Cowlitz County in recent years include pertussis (whooping
cough) and tuberculosis. Waterborne illnesses are ones that
typically transmit microscopic parasites, such as cryptosporidium
and giardia. Diseases contracted through contact with blood,
saliva or other bodily fluids include herpes simplex and
meningitis. E. coli and shigellosis are examples of food-borne
illnesses.
