LONGVIEW MAN SENTENCED FOR RAPE OF A CHILD
On
December 10, 2010, 31-year-old Longview resident Daniel Eugene
Grile was sentenced to 84 months in prison on two counts of rape
of a child in the third degree (domestic violence).
An
investigation by the Longview Police Department uncovered that
on more than one occasion between April and May 2010, Grile went
into the bedroom of his 15-year-old victim and coerced her into
sexual intercourse, telling her that she “owed him” for not
telling her mother that she had invited a boy over to the house
without permission.
Based on
Grile’s criminal history, the legislature set the standard
sentence for this case at five years in prison. Chief Criminal
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Michelle Shaffer recommended an
exceptional sentence of eight years based upon “the abuse of the
position of trust Grile was placed in, invasion of the victim’s
privacy, and the significant detrimental effect of this crime on
the victim and the rest of her family.” The Honorable James
Warme imposed a seven-year prison sentence, to be followed by at
least three years community custody with several conditions
including no contact with minors and sex offender treatment.
At
sentencing, Grile stated that he had “messed up” and then vowed
to appeal the exceptional sentence.
Grile’s
felony criminal history includes 2002 convictions for theft in
the second degree and malicious mischief in the second degree, a
2004 conviction for theft in the first degree, and 2006
convictions for drug possession and bail jumping. His
misdemeanor history includes driving while suspended, vehicle
prowls, trespassing, theft, disorderly conduct and two
violations of a protection order.
Longview
Police Detective Marc Langlois was the lead investigator on the
case. Bruce Hanify represented Grile.
